Three Oaks and a Maple

Three Oaks and a Maple

This line of big old trees—three pin oaks and a red maple—border a fallow field and caught my attention one unusually warm morning in early March. Grasses in the field and at their bases had already begun to green up in advance of spring, but the tress retained the stark architectural quality of winter. I thought the lacey pattern of the fine branches contrasted wonderfully with the solid, heaviness of their trunks, especially against a perfectly clear, crystalline blue sky.
