Blue and Gold

So often my paintings seem to me all about color, and often I choose titles for them that reflect that obsession, as does Blue and Gold. This apple tree in my front yard has been the subject of so many fall paintings over the years, due both to the wonderful clear gold its leaves turn and the angular pattern of its arching limbs. It's also a hangout for birds year-round, who I think find it really easy to perch on its smooth, thin new growth-of-the-year. These two blue jays kept coming back to caw and ruffle their feathers at each other while I was painting the tree, so I added them later with the help of photographs. I love the mauves and blues of the background set against the gold leaves, with the sense of motion imparted by the birds.
