The Paper Birches

This stand of Paper Birches intrigued me due not only to the intricate tracery of pale limbs dotted with the delicate new leaves of April, but the contrast between them and the mysterious and dark woods beyond them. The soft colors of early spring under the birches also have counterpoints in the deep shadows behind. I chose to paint it on a small scale to emphasize the shimmering, jewel-like colors and buoyancy of the white birch bark.
