Great Blue Herons make fabulous takeoffs: all ungainly wings, neck, dangling legs. And yet all put together it's remarkably graceful. I painted the background for Serenity on Chincoteague Island, where the flat, monotone expanses of salt marsh are a perfect habitat for heron species-----as well as a terrific artistic setting for their sweeping, almost otherworldly flight.
