7:00 AM December 22

This tiny painting has an almost-amusingly long title for a reason: it was painted on the morning of December 22, 2003, which was the first day after the Winter Solstice, and therefore the first full day of winter. It had snowed the night before, and the morning broke clear, cold, crisp and sparkling with a fresh coating of snow. The brambles I painted were washed in subtle blues and pinks, and a male cardinal-----his feathers puffed to provide extra insulation against the cold-----was the perfect finishing touch for a delightful tiny piece of artwork. As is the case with most of my snowscenes, this piece was painted while looking out a window.
