Frozen Shadows
![]() |
I'm often asked how I paint snow scenes since I work on site. The answer is that paintings such as Frozen Shadows are painted looking out a window, allowing me to be in a heated room or at least my truck while I paint. Rarely, there are winter days warm enough to allow outdoor painting in the climate where I live, but then there certainly wouldn't be snow on the ground! In this case I parked my truck and painted the barn at Tinicum Park, Bucks County, in relative comfort.
Frozen Shadows is a painting about the angular shadows being cast on the fresh snow. I was especially intrigued by the shadow of the wonderful old bank barn, with its delightful cupola. I started this piece very early in the morning and had the park all to myself for several hours. Just as I was finishing up, cross country skiers began to arrive.
